Venue

Both scientific meetings (ICSSUR'09 and the Feynman Festival) will be held in Jesuit Convict Building of the Palacky University in Olomouc. The Convict is one of the oldest buildings of the university. Large baroque complex, originally belonging to the church and later to the army, has been thoroughly reconstructed for the needs of the university in the nineties and today it hosts the Centrum of Arts of the Palacky University.

For the needs of the conferences, the Auditorium and Lectorium halls of the Convict will be available. Smaller halls and lecture rooms are available for section meetings when needed. Lunches will be served in the area of the Atrium, while posters will be exhibited at the corridors of the Convict throughout the duration of the conferences.

Palacky University, established 1573, is the second oldest university in the Czech Republic. Today the university has eight faculties and educates more than 21,000 students. This makes the city of Olomouc, counting about 100,000 inhabitants, a true university city. The historical center of the city is rather small but it offers quite a lot to be seen.

The Convict (address Univerzitní 3, Olomouc, see the mark on the maps) is placed in the historical center of the city and is easily accessible by walk from most hotels where the participants will be accommodated.

From the main railway station you either walk (Masarykova ave. to nám. Republiky, about 20 minutes) or take a tram (four stops, trams 2,4,6) and then continue in the direction of the tram, turn left to the Univerzitní street and climb about 80 meters to the Convict entrance. Tickets for the tram can be purchased (12 CZK) in vending machines at the tram stops or at tobacco shops.

The City of Olomouc is placed in the middle of Moravia (eastern part of the Czech Republic). You can reach Olomouc either from Prague:

  • by car take D1 from Prague to Vyškov and then continue using R46 to Olomouc, about 280 km;
  • by train the best choice are Pendolino trains (goes six times each day from Hlavní nádraží station, 2h 15mins), there is also a number of IC and EC trains (most of them depart from Hlavní nádraží, some from Nádraží Holešovice). Tickets can be purchased online. It is recommended to reserve/buy your tickets (especially for Pendolino on Sunday afternoon/evening, Monday morning and Friday evening) in advance as some trains might be sold out. It is also possible to buy a train ticket directly from Prague Airport - you would take the "Airport Express" bus from the airport to Hlavní nádraží).

From Vienna:

  • by car take E461 to Mikulov and continue (R52) to Brno, then to D1 and R46 to Olomouc, about 200 km;
  • there are few direct trains, take IC or EC train from Wien to Přerov and then from Přerov to Olomouc.

Useful remarks:

  • If you come to Prague by air, you can use public transport (bus 119) to get from Ruzyně airport to Dejvická metro station and use metro A and C lines to get either to Hlavní nádraží [Main railway station] or Nádraží Holešovice (one ticket costs 26 CZK). Alternatively, there is "Airport express" bus line that takes you directly to Hlavní nádraží (50 CZK). Taxi is much more expensive and some taxi drivers are known to over-price.
  • Most trains from Vienna to the Czech Republic depart from Sud Bahnhof.
